In our book No Hard Feelings, one of our most popular suggestions is to write an “It’s okay to…” list. Combating them is crucial to helping everyone on your team feel secure and supported, especially in the current climate. These seemingly small uncertainties (“Can I step outside to take a short break?”) can become major stressors. You might know that it’s okay to take a walk in the middle of the day to clear your head, but it might not be as obvious to your colleagues, especially if they’re new hires. They might have changed since you all started working from home, or perhaps they’ve never been explicit to everyone. right now), it’s good practice to write down the unstated cultural and emotional norms that exist within your team or company. If you’re on a video call with 20 of your colleagues, is it okay to turn your camera off? When you email your boss, do you include a bunch of emojis?ĭuring stressful times (i.e.

Annabel’s stream of consciousness felt very genuine and with a character as open and honest as Owen, this book granted readers an authentic glimpse into not one, but two people’s lives. The writing style is simple, but very honest and includes a couple very nicely worded observations that are sure to resonate beyond the confines of the book and into the life of the reader. While some of the plot was utterly predictable, SPOILER: Annabel and loner Owen become friends and then more, as he helps her see the good qualities within herself that she is blind to, Clarke makes her way back into Annabel’s life, the emotion Dessen weaves into her narrative made up for this. The opening quote by Robert Frost which claims: The best way around it through, summarizes the overall message of the book from the start, making the reader both receptive to and aware of the slow journey Annabel ventures on throughout the novel. Nevertheless, Sarah Dessen masterfully balances the light and heavy passages in her book, resulting in a quick read that also makes a lasting impact. What seems like a light read quickly reveals that there is more going on with our narrator, Annabel Greene, than she herself is willing to admit. He agreed to meet her at Canaan Corners, a convenience store three miles from town on the Utah side of the border. She went to her sister’s house and called her brother in SLC and asked him to help her. Excommunicating men who were perceived as a threat and reassigning their wives and children to other men (sometimes such reassignments happened multiple times one women complained that she felt like a “polygamy prostitute.”). Forcing younger and younger girls into marriages with old men. Killing all the dogs in the community, Banning the color red. Destroying all outside literature (including her collection of 300 children’s books that she cherished). Things like pulling all the kids out of public schools. The sect had become increasingly extreme under the leadership of Warren Jeffs, and she was desperate to get out. She needed a time when her husband Merril was gone and all eight of her children were home. She had been preparing for this moment for a long time, squirreling away some cash and some extra medications for her children. The book opens with a Preface that describes the actual escape itself, on April 21, 2003. It gives an inside view of what it was like for her to grow up FLDS, and the challenges she faced in leaving it. I finally finished Carolyn Jessop’s Escape, which I bought from Benchmark at MHA. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Ruthless rivalPast and present collide as Arya falls hard for Christian. I love everything about them, even all the stuff-machismo, misogyny, meal planning-that others hold up as everything that’s wrong with them. The original James Bond novels are the very height of spy fiction for me, delicious in their construction and filling in the satisfaction they leave you with. On the occasion of his creator Ian Fleming’s birthday - he was born 115 years ago on I’d like to rectify that right here and now. People who know me have heard me talk excessively about Batman and the Beatles, but I’ve never pontificated much on Bond. Lucky for me, my dad was a big fan of all three, because I picked up those three torches and ran with them. I was born right smack-dab in the middle of the famed “three Bs” of the 1960s: Batman, the Beatles, and, of course, James Bond.
